Continue readingI hate to be a person that sometimes difficult to make a choice. Not every choices, but choosing a car color is one of hard thing for me. Googling hundred of 404 photo from internet then i narrowed it down to grey. Grey is cool. But almost of my 4×4 is green haha. My mom suggested white. My wive prefer sandy white. And daughter think dusty pink would be nice. My son had no clue at all. Complicated.
Brake is functional now, not in top form, but its stop, eventually. We replace the brake master, booster and repair all of the slave. Some damaged brake pipe and flexible also replaced. Not very neat but the main focus is to make things work, not the bling-bling installation.
Clutch working good, we replace the master and slave clutch. Horn is replace, Kang Cece and Mas Manun from RDN also rewire some cable. So the lamp, fuse, tail light is in working order. Some dashboard lamp also added. Well its more look like a car 🙂
Steering functioning but had badly backlash. Tear it down and find the main bearing is broken. The mechanic had trouble find the exact same size, so they make the adapter with lathe machine.
Move the air filter box to the engine hood (behind the cabin before) with proper piping and out to snorkel hole. Will make the snorkel later.
Engine had no problem, start easily. But the radiator is in bad shape. Replace and make custom mount better. Put the new water reservoar tank from donor vehicle (mitsubishi truck).
Its very hard to find Unimogs part in Indonesia. This turn signal lamp wasn’t exception. You can try ebay or from this respectful expedition vehicle webstore, but in local Mercedes Benz store, especially in Bandung, West Java its pretty non-existant. Don’t waste your time, been there done that :).
But you know, searching for old car parts, walk in-out the part store and flea market bring some interesting experience and sometimes, new friend. Be it an shopkeeper, mechanic, second part broker (calo) or just parking officer.
After searching the shop with no result, I got some information from secondhand market broker that the lamp plastic/lenses can be repaired or even create custom made. Well, worth to try. And here the result. Its cost me 2 days and 100.000 rupiah/pcs.
Its made by Kang Dinar at Banceuy second hand market (Pasar Banceuy). Im forgot the shop number, but you can ask there.

Fuel tank, flushed and then repaired the sheet metal
Recently I’ve adopted an Unimog, (oh man, again?)
Its beloved 404S 1963, in Indonesia we called it TonHar, an abbreviation of Peleton Pemeliharaan (Maintenance Platoon). Historical said its used as logging truck by state-owned forestry company (Perhutani).
Engine started but brake system out of services. So i’ve any chance to drove it. Towed from Surabaya to nearest shop. Thanks for the help om Budi.
Last week, the mech started to dismantling the wheel and inspecting the brake.
UNIMOG 404, wheel nut stuck, WD-40 came to the rescue
Its come that the brakepad and wheel cylinder in bad condition. Brakepad shop can repair the pad, but we can’t find w
heel cylinder everywhere, at least at local Bandung part shop. Even the closest look and size is nothing. Langka ketemu boss. Alas.
If you had any info regarding this parts, or conversion from any Japanesse truck that will suit the brake, let me know :). The new part was very expensive and need to imported. This is not an option, at least for me as a cheap guy hehe.
Up/bigger – Front diameter 1 – 5/8″ (41mm) , rear 1 – 1/8″ (28mm). Length 86mm.
Need Polished very bad, or better throwed it to the trash (lem biru)
